"Hearts of Gratitude" Exhibition & Reception

On Friday, February 3, 2012, during the First Friday art walk at Artspace, McRay Studios in Studio 205, will unveil a collection of nearly one hundred 6” x 6” collage paintings on canvas from the collection entitled, “Hearts of Gratitude”. The pieces will be available for purchase at $75 each, or 2 for $100.

In 2011, McRay painted an impressive one-hundred heart paintings made available for public viewing and purchase. Again McRay has returned to this series with a renewed passion. “The paintings touch on an emotion that we all understand “love”, says artist, Eric McRay. “Parents, spouses, children, friends--love comes in many forms at different points in our lives.” The collection showcases the variety of emotions love and passion can be expressed with mixed media, collage and acrylic paint.

It is rare for an audience to view a large collection and be given the opportunity to bring home a piece of it. The paintings are placed at an accessible price-point for novice and expert collectors. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, these pieces are expected to go quickly. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the collection in its entirety during the February First Friday art walk.

“Facing the Enemies Within” by Jim Rohn

We are not born with courage, but neither are we born with fear. Maybe some fears are brought on by your own experiences, by what someone has told you, by what you’ve read in the papers. Some fears are valid, like walking alone in a bad part of town at two o’clock in the morning. But once you learn to avoid that situation, you won’t need to live in fear of it.

Fears, even the most basic ones, can totally destroy our ambitions. Fear can destroy fortunes. Fear can destroy relationships. Fear, if left unchecked, can destroy our lives. Fear is one of the many enemies lurking inside us.

Let me tell you about five of the other enemies we face from within. The first enemy that you’ve got to destroy before it destroys you is indifference. What a tragic disease this is. “Ho-hum, let it slide. I’ll just drift along.” Here’s one problem with drifting: you can’t drift your way to the top of the mountain.

The second enemy we face is indecision. Indecision is the thief of opportunity and enterprise. It will steal your chances for a better future. Take a sword to this enemy.

The third enemy inside is doubt. Sure, there’s room for healthy skepticism. You can’t believe everything. But you also can’t let doubt take over. Many people doubt the past, doubt the future, doubt each other, doubt the government, doubt the possibilities and doubt the opportunities. Worst of all, they doubt themselves. I’m telling you, doubt will destroy your life and your chances of success. It will empty both your bank account and your heart. Doubt is an enemy. Go after it. Get rid of it.

The fourth enemy within is worry. We’ve all got to worry some. Just don’t let it conquer you. Instead, let it alarm you. Worry can be useful. If you step off the curb in New York City and a taxi is coming, you’ve got to worry. But you can’t let worry loose like a mad dog that drives you into a small corner. Here’s what you’ve got to do with your worries: drive them into a small corner. Whatever is out to get you, you’ve got to get it. Whatever is pushing on you, you’ve got to push back.

The fifth interior enemy is over-caution. It is the timid approach to life. Timidity is not a virtue; it’s an illness. If you let it go, it’ll conquer you. Timid people don’t get promoted. They don’t advance and grow and become powerful in the marketplace. You’ve got to avoid over-caution.

Do battle with the enemy. Do battle with your fears. Build your courage to fight what’s holding you back, what’s keeping you from your goals and dreams. Be courageous in your life and in your pursuit of the things you want and the person you want to become.

The argument against me is simple: Donations of art to charity auctions raise money for good causes and raise the profile of artists who put their art in the public eye. It is a good argument. It has worked well. This seductive sales pitch has pulled in countless millions of dollars over the past few decades.

Problem is, this argument has not lived up to its bargain. Sad news: Your profile got humiliated because the collector got such a bargain on your art. If your art was one of dozens of trinkets on a wall with a hundred other artists, your profile actually disappeared there in the crowd anyway.

I would love to hear the story of the artist whose career rocketed to success because he or she donated a work to a charity auction and this act alone tipped the first domino toward an avalanche of success coming his or her way. This narrative is always implied. I've never seen it happen.

Charity art auctions are the emptiest of promises to artists: you give us your work, you get nothing in return except a party invite to an event where you are a second class citizen. Watch as the price of what you really will let your work go for is nakedly advertised to the select group of people to whom your work is meant to be seen as rare and desirable.

Suppose you want to at least deduct a donation of your art to the charity, guess what? The law only allows an artist to deduct the cost of materials. Meanwhile a collector can buy your work for the minimum bid, have it appraised at its full retail value and donate it to some other good cause for that top dollar amount.

As for the merits of the infinite number of good causes out there, what is the value in giving up a painting that would sell for a thousand dollars retail in order to see it raise 50 Bucks for that cause? Pick one charity, donate generously and keep the collectors assuming that the price you ask at the gallery is the best and only price they are going to get.

Someone has to be the bad guy here, so you can blame me for inspiring you to donate cash to a good cause and to keep your art career safe from the bargain bin. Print this out and send it with your regrets to anyone asking you to devalue your work in the name of glamorizing their efforts on behalf of yet another worthy cause in a world of infinite and endless good causes. Tell them the art stops here.

I saw an old lady carrying her stuff out of her falling down house in trash bags this morning and I broke down and wept. My insurance agent tells me we're well covered and we'll be ok. "Artspace after Raleigh Tornado"

I hope everyone is safe and that you faired yesterday's storm without any damage. I sent a similar email out to the studio artists yesterday but wanted to reach out to everyone and let you know that Artspace is fine and now has electricity. We were without power from Saturday until about 3:30am today.

We are so thankful and lucky that we didn't have any damage. The staff is working today and we will resume our regular business hours starting tomorrow at 10am.

Thinking of all those who are dealing with loss and destruction from Saturday's storm. My best to all of you and your loved ones!

I was in the Artspace building in downtown Raleigh when the tornado hit South Raleigh. Dark clouds, severe winds, and flying debris, then the worst I've seen since Hurricane Fran. Next was the challenge of getting out of downtown with the streets littered with down power lines, fallen trees, debris, and no street lights. Thank God it wasn't worst. Pray for those you have lost homes and love ones.

Dianne Reeves – widely considered to be one of the most significant singers in jazz today – will appear with her quartet to close The Clayton Center’s 2010-11 Palladian Series on April 1 at 8pm.

Reeves is the only recording artist in any singing category to have won the Grammy for Best Vocal Performance for three consecutive recordings: A Little Moonlight in 2003, The Calling in 2001 and In The Moment – Live in Concert in 2000. In 2006, she went on to win the award for a record-breaking fourth time for her soundtrack to the George Clooney film Good Night, and Good Luck.

Reeves’ most recent release, the 2008 CD, When You Know, is a, collection of love songs whose perspective on love ranges from youthful innocence to enlightened maturity. Produced by George Duke, When You Know is Reeves’ most commercial offering in years. Among the featured tracks are The Temptations’, “Just My Imagination” and Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You." She is scheduled to release a new album later this year.

Reeves’ was clearly born of jazz. Her singing draws upon a world of influence, and much like Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, Reeves is tied to a powerful storytelling instinct. She was the first vocalist signed to the reactivated Blue Note/EMI label in 1987, and as a result of her unique R&B and jazz stylings, she has since captured a huge following and tremendous critical acclaim throughout the world.

I fired by bosses in corporate American and became a full-time professional artist. I've been gainfully unemployed for the last twelve years. Life has been profitable, prolific, and downright a lot of fun. Many days I feel like a kid in a candy store. I love being an artist!
